What a blast from the past. I'm just reading this to cite in my paper in my cinematography class. Who would have known how far technology came since this time. I didn't expect to get any feedback, so thank you very much.

I live in the UK, however I got a multi region
DVD player so I will make enquiries to obtain it.

Seeing that most of the films reviewed here in this marvellous blog are only Region One, it certainly is a huge asset...

Again, thanks for your thoughtful assistance.Rob Jnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-38907043873185360832010-04-05T18:43:27.403-04:002010-04-05T18:43:27.403-04:00Sam - I really have no excuse for not making it a ...Sam - I really have no excuse for not making it a point to see LA CHIENNE as soon as possible.

M.Roca - Ditto... I still feel strong that it is among Lang's best films.

Rob J. - Amazon has various release easily available (at least here in the States, I don't know where you are, obviously). Lang really brings the gloom here. It's crafted with such skill that I marvel at how he maintains the oppressiveness, while never exploiting his characters like a cheap horror movie. Our list of Lang films were really similar. I will praise you for having great taste!!! ......M.RocaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-87777402763300785162010-04-05T00:14:14.530-04:002010-04-05T00:14:14.530-04:00"The film is based on Jean Renoir’s 1931 film..."The film is based on Jean Renoir’s 1931 film La Chienne. I haven’t seen Renoir’s version, but my understanding is that it deals with the subject in more of a comedic fashion, whereas this one is deadly serious."

Actually Dave, in the end LA CHIENNE is oppresively serious, but your point here is well taken with the pervasive gloom on display in SCARLET STREET throughout. It's reputation is well-earned, and I do like both teamings of the three, here and in WOMAN IN THE WINDOW. But my resistence to calling this an out and out masterpieces is that I always rated Renoir's film higher. It's really unfair to let this get in the way of a film of this caliber though, and this is an excellent selection to launch the Top 20. You've again written an essay of understanding and clarity.Sam Julianonoreply@blogger.com
