What makes Ryan such a great actor, I think, is that his work as villains and heavies really informs his more heroic roles. It's as if the sense of decency displayed here is really earned, and that he fully understands the alternatives (and literally played them out, in films like Crossfire).Doniphonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02407443845368110678noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-49128920655200161762010-04-01T16:02:29.688-04:002010-04-01T16:02:29.688-04:00A great, great movie.

Robert Ryan as the broken down Stoker Thompson looking for one more shot of glory, gave his finest performance. Whoever won the the Oscar for Best Actor in 1949 must have given one hell of a performance to surpass this role...

The ending is heartbreaking, but even so Thompson was left with some kind of redemption even if the cost was truly dreadful. It wouldn't be Film Noir if it had a happy ending.

Beg, steal or borrow....Rob Jnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-42308444928791250592010-04-01T14:39:45.703-04:002010-04-01T14:39:45.703-04:00I like this movie but for some unexplainable reaso...I like this movie but for some unexplainable reason I don't love it. Robert Ryan is a favorite of mine and he does well here but something keeps this from being a top tier noir for me. I love the scenes in the locker room between the boxers and their obvious camaraderie with each other. I think maybe the short running time mixed with the heavy amount of film spent in the ring wore on me (though I like the whole real time aspect). I guess Raging Bull and Body and Soul spend less time showing boxing and that makes me appreciate those pictures more. I also think the rabid audience yelling at the fighters seemed like overkill after a while. I still think it's Top 50 material but I would've placed it lower.....M.RocaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-82492964229694540082010-04-01T12:14:37.733-04:002010-04-01T12:14:37.733-04:00"It really is a perfectly paced, condensed st..."It really is a perfectly paced, condensed story, fitting so much into its brisk running time."

When Ed says this, I am tempted to make a comparsion with HIGH NOON, which in a sense is it's "western" equivalent. It really is a perfectly paced, condensed story, fitting so much into its brisk running time. The cinematography is stunning, Robert Ryan delivers a fantastically tortured central performance, and the boxing scenes are probably the best I've ever seen, fast and brutal and forceful. This is great filmmaking.Ed Howardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18014222247676090467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-17623775328429495912010-04-01T08:17:54.133-04:002010-04-01T08:17:54.133-04:00I regard this as the greatest boxing film ever mad...I regard this as the greatest boxing film ever made, and it's certainly a no-brainer for a lofty position on this countdown. I would even go higher, but this is high enough for a top hundred, where traffic at the top is really getting hairy now. There is really so much to say here, but I'll venture to assert what you did yourself in this titanic essay, and that is not to repeat yourself. But you really sum it up here perfectly:

"The Set-Up manages to do it because everything about it is as tight as a dead-heat – direction, photography, script, acting. Everything."

Excluding Wise's co-direction of WEST SIDE STORY, which I know is really a different animal, I agree this is the versatile director's most renowned triumph, and Robert Ryan is magnificent.Sam Julianonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-76378811170535321212010-04-01T07:29:59.458-04:002010-04-01T07:29:59.458-04:00Incredible movie and definitely one of my all time...Incredible movie and definitely one of my all time favorite noirs!
