It's interesting to see some pretty well-known titles at the bottom of the list. I'm fully aware of the fact that I like this one more than most people. But I'm sure there will be many more instances of this happening, though, so things will remain interesting!Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07134196370913749544noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-90068517087076283532010-01-14T08:06:06.784-05:002010-01-14T08:06:06.784-05:00Indeed, I agree with both Tony and John here, and ...Indeed, I agree with both Tony and John here, and much for the reasons espoused. But your fondness of teh atmospherics and your understanding that much of the ranking system here comes upon personal preference would seem to support a placement. Yet you yourself admit here it's limitations:

"Fritz Lang would later dismiss the film as his simply fulfilling a contract, which may be how he approached it. The results are a bit more impressive than that, although the limitations of the screenplay and story mean that no matter how much effort Lang put forth, the movie would only have gone so far. Things are not as suspenseful as the characters seem to believe and the conclusion could have been improved by not being so abrupt. This seems to be a common complaint among reviews that I have read of the film – that for whatever reason, be it money, time or Lang’s effort, the movie is wrapped far too quickly. It’s a criticism I agree with, but not to the point that it invalidates the entire effort."

It goes without saying that you are sustaining the fine and insightful writing here.Sam Julianonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-87188971921480692922010-01-14T07:33:12.160-05:002010-01-14T07:33:12.160-05:00I agree with Tony on this, minor Lang, and frankly...I agree with Tony on this, minor Lang, and frankly I am “shocked” (lol) that you have ranked this higher than “The Woman in the Window”, not a totally successful film either.
I always liked Richard Conte and like you, any exscuse to see him in a film is good enough. I actually like the premise of the film, a person, in this case Anne Baxter, posing as someone else and then finding herself involved in a crime. A device that has been used many times before (No Man of Her Own). Already two Lang’s and I am sure there are many to follow.Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01808503055317962289noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-6553076116404573032010-01-14T02:18:04.894-05:002010-01-14T02:18:04.894-05:00Definitely a minor Lang melodrama. To think that L...Definitely a minor Lang melodrama. To think that Lang completed The Big Heat only five months after finishing this effort boggles the mind. He clearly wasn't interested, and with a pedestrian script, there was nowhere to go. While Anne Baxter shines as the dame who thinks she has killed a guy, Richard Conte as the cynical reporter is very weak, and he is out-classed by then b-player Burr. The saccharine ending also disappoints. Nick Musucura’s contribution as DP is sadly undistiguished, though some moody scenes impress.Tony D'Ambrahttp://filmsnoir.netnoreply@blogger.com
