Whenever I think of Richard Basehart it's in terms of VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA. I undertand what is being asserted here about legitimate noirs and procederals, but that wouldn't affect my own rankings.Sam Julianonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-21172058465973376272010-01-18T14:31:01.698-05:002010-01-18T14:31:01.698-05:00John - Yes, you most definitely will see more Mann...John - Yes, you most definitely will see more Mann-Alton work in the selections to come!

Samuel - I agree, although, but I do think that it most definitely qualifies as a noir rather than a separate category. Police procedurals like this are a subset of noir in general, I think. Most of them tend to not be that great, in my opinion, but there are exceptions and others will pop up as we continue.Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07134196370913749544noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-60862401771276351312010-01-18T12:23:00.036-05:002010-01-18T12:23:00.036-05:00It's a beautiful, brutal film but it should ra...It's a beautiful, brutal film but it should rank rather low in a noir survey because it is essentially a procedural while noir, as you say, tends to be more character-driven. If someone ever does a survey of procedurals it should rank much higher.Samuel Wilsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00934870299522899944noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-23544407715119572462010-01-18T09:32:18.164-05:002010-01-18T09:32:18.164-05:00Mann and Alton made a great team and you are right...Mann and Alton made a great team and you are right that it is Alton's camera that is the real highlight in this film, as is the "climatic chase through the sewers of Los Angles." I am sure we will see more of Mann/Alton coming up. Great review!Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01808503055317962289noreply@blogger.com
