The film is filled with sexual innuendo and sly characterization. I love the dinner scene where they discover, as you say, they are “kindred spirits”, and the idea of returning the pocketbook for the reward which is worth more than they would get on the back market is worthy of Wilder.
Hopkins is charming and always sexy. She probably ranks third in my list of pre-code actresses behind Stanwyck and Blondell. Herbert Marshall and Kay Francis deliver their roles with panache, and confident ease. The entire cast is excellent. While I won’t go as far as to say this is the best comedy ever made (my personal favorite is Some Like it Hot) it certainly ranks up their as one of the best of all time in sophistication, wit, style and just pure fun. It is certainly one of the top films of 1932 and of any year. Definitely would add it to my list from yesterday’s post. It's still possible that more Lubitsch could pop up in this countdown, but many of his other films that I love came out in years that had some great competition.

There's a certain Chaplin comedy coming up in the near future of this countdown that I could also label as the "best comedy ever made" and never think twice about it... so there are a number of serious contenders.Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07134196370913749544noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-23387965467567767532009-06-01T16:23:25.891-04:002009-06-01T16:23:25.891-04:00My Own Top Film of 1932: TROUBLE IN PARADISE (Lubi...My Own Top Film of 1932: TROUBLE IN PARADISE (Lubitsch)
My Runners-Ups:
LES CROIX DE BOIS (Bernard)
THE MUSIC BOX (Laurel and Hardy)
I WAS BORN....BUT (Ozu)
BONDU SAUVE DES EAUX (Renoir)
LOVE ME TONIGHT (Mamoulian)

Well Dave, I am in complete agreement with you (and others on this thread) that this is a towering masterpiece of 1932, even if the five I named push reasonably close. The Lubitsch is also a strong contender for the greatest comedy ever made (as you again rightly assert) but the competition from Chaplin and Keaton as well as Sturges and Lubitsch himself would make a definitive answer most difficult. But TROUBLE IN PARADISE is the man with the famed "touch"'s greatets film, edging out THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER and TO BE OR NOT TO BE.

I also saw it once on a big screen a while back at Manhattan's Film Forum, but as was the case with Sturges's SULLIVANS TRAVELS, the experience of seeing this intimate film can just as effectively be negotiated at home.

So much of what you say in this enthusiastic, very well-written assessment rings true, especially your assertion that the rapid-fire dialogue is at the center of the film's greatness. It's an exquisite American masterpiece, made with European sensibilities, and it's pretty much a perfect film.

I do like other films in 1932, including the likes of HORSE FEATHERS, CHAIN GANG and SCARFACE, but the above choices belong on the top wrung, methinks.Sam Julianonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-15107242393168552782009-06-01T15:54:42.123-04:002009-06-01T15:54:42.123-04:00Judy - do you guys get TCM in the UK? I haven't seen it, though I've been watching out for a showing since reading a lot about it in a book on romantic comedy - but maybe I'll get lucky soon if I keep scouring the multi-channel listings.:) Anyway, it sounds great from your review.

Must confess I haven't seen very much Lubitsch, since hardly anything by him is available over here unless you manage to find it on Youtube or buy on import at a hefty price, but I did recently see and love 'The Shop Around the Corner' (which isn't available on DVD either) on TV.
