Some from this year I do remember admiring are 'Death in Venice', 'The Go-Between' and 'Walkabout'. This was a film that has resonated with me since I first saw it at the Columbia 1 & 2 theater.

McCabe and Mrs. Miller is a great choice. You point out some of the things I most like about this film. The sense of how dirty and filthy life must have been out west, and the bleakness of it all, not like they are portrayed in most westerns. Beatty does give one of his most endearing performances. A great choice.

#1 The Last Picture Show

Runner ups

McCabe and Mrs Miller
The Emigrants ( a film I wish was available of DVD)
Klute
MacBeth
Straw Dogs
Mon Oncle Antonio
The Panic in Needle Park
Murmur of the Heart
Walkabout
Harold and Maude
Taking Off
The French ConnectionJohnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01808503055317962289noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-2681863118069975842009-08-25T20:03:07.696-04:002009-08-25T20:03:07.696-04:00Sam - Your list makes me realize that there are ma...Sam - Your list makes me realize that there are many more movies from 1971 that I still need to see, so it might be an even better year than I thought it was... and I already thought it was outstanding.Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07134196370913749544noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-75196041338334953482009-08-25T13:07:31.581-04:002009-08-25T13:07:31.581-04:00My Own #1 Film of 1971:

Your own #1 choice is a great one, and I do well remember your initial review atthis site, which still stands up as one of your best even while adding to the legacy. It's a revisionist western that could rightly be argued as Altman's greatest film, and you handle the thematic context beautifully.
This was a great year, and my own runner-up list is a testament to this position.Sam Julianonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-86516733584551582062009-08-25T12:09:26.344-04:002009-08-25T12:09:26.344-04:00Dave, you seem to match my own taste in Altman. McCabe makes my runner-up list for 1971 along with Monte Hellman's Two Lane Blacktop, The French Connection, King Hu's A Touch of Zen and George Lucas's THX-1138.

I don't go as far as you do in dislike for Clockwork Orange but it's one of my least-favorite Kubricks. That might sound strange once I name Ken Russell's The Devils and Jacopetti & Prosperi's Goodbye Uncle Tom as my favorite films of 1971. The year really seems to be an acid test for film buffs' tolerance of cinematic cruelty -- and this is before anyone mentions Straw Dogs. I think that Russell and the Italians harness cruelty and sensuality into overpowering statements of injustice and indignation that transcend their arguably exploitative motivations. But we'll see what others think.Samuel Wilsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00934870299522899944noreply@blogger.com
