The fact that The Seventh Seal was something like his 17th or 19th feature is kind of amazing; there are a lot of undiscovered gems in those early years, though few of them are well-rounded enough to be called "great".MovieMan0283http://thedancingimage.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-71306133391968047282009-07-17T18:30:21.050-04:002009-07-17T18:30:21.050-04:00Judy - Thanks for the compliments and I agree with...Judy - Thanks for the compliments and I agree with you about George Sanders. I'll have more extensive comments on a still quite good film on my blog this weekend. That leaves Winchester 73 on top of my 1950 list, as that film never lets up, followed by Asphalt Jungle, Rashomon and Sunset Blvd. All About Eve does have one of the best endings ever in that mirror scene and deserves an honorable mention, while I'd recommend The Gunfighter as the year's second-best western.Samuel Wilsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00934870299522899944noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-2306573088249166272009-07-16T13:55:00.481-04:002009-07-16T13:55:00.481-04:00John - Thanks for the compliments, and it seems we...John - Thanks for the compliments, and it seems we agree on most of the selections for this year. I love In a Lonely Place and The Asphalt Jungle so much... they are films that I will have to go back and touch on after the countdown is completed.

The Gunfighter is the at the top of the list of westerns I really, really need to see. I have heard good things about it and am even more looking forward to it after seeing it included on your list here.Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07134196370913749544noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-46540083009672828842009-07-16T13:50:50.392-04:002009-07-16T13:50:50.392-04:00Dave, I have to go with “Sunset Blvd.” though I wo...Dave, I have to go with “Sunset Blvd.” though I would say “All About Eve” and “Rashomon” are close contenders. I have never seen Sam’s pick for #1 though I always read good things about. I do agree with you the “The Furies” is underrated and may even deserve a ranking on the runner up list. Preminger’s “Where the Sidewalk Ends” is a real gem with Dana Andrews giving a amazing performance. I do have more mixed feelings about D.O.A. which I have some problems with. You review hits the right button when you discuss what makes this film so great. You paragraph below says it all

“the material is incredible, and I think that a sensible argument can be made that this is the finest dialogue ever written in Hollywood. It is witty, biting, and at times laugh out loud funny. The thing about the dialogue, though, is that it’s unique. The nature of it is different from the way that the speech in, say, noirs is biting. In noirs, the acidic nature is due to lead characters playing the cool, tough-guy roles, firing off one-liners that are stinging. And this is not rapid-fire speech, with every character talking over one another and as fast as they possibly can, which mars many otherwise well-written screwball comedies for me. This speech feels real and takes no imagination or suspension of belief to picture real people talking this way. It is a rare movie that is so well-written that you could simply close your eyes and listen to it and still enjoy things. The other important aspect of Mankiewicz’s screenplay that is remarkable is how well he writes for women. The women truly are the driving forces of the movie – whether it is Margo, Eve, or even Karen. How he was able to write to naturally for these female characters still amazes to me. Mankiewicz deservedly was awarded the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.”

#1 Sunset Blvd.

Runner ups

All About Eve
Rashomon
In A Lonely Place
The Asphalt Jungle
The Gunfighter
Night and the City
Where the Sidewalk Ends

Though not in the same league as the films above, “Caged” has always been a favorite and worth a mention.Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01808503055317962289noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-6412205488301456482009-07-16T13:48:16.739-04:002009-07-16T13:48:16.739-04:00Samuel - Awesome! I don't get to talk to many folks who have seen The Furies, and even fewer still who seem to like it as much as I do, so I'll be very interested to see your comments on it. It would not have really threatened taking the top spot for me, but it certainly deserves mention in this great year.
