Lots of minor classics, good movies, interesting films, but few masterpieces. I'd probably go with Kiss of Death, but that's unfair as I have a suspicion a repeat viewing of Out of the Past would boost its position. But for now, the combination of postwar "realism" and the hyper-cartoon of Tommy Udo render Kiss of Death my favorite.MovieMan0283http://thedancingimage.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-3169777291068752492009-07-10T18:50:15.498-04:002009-07-10T18:50:15.498-04:00Sam - I _love_ Melville but have never been able t...Sam - I _love_ Melville but have never been able to find a copy of La Silence de La Mer that was not outrageously priced. Always considered it one of the essential noirs and I agree 100% There is no one in this film you can trust. It is cross and double cross. Jane Greer is one hell of a dangerous woman in this film. Robert Mitchum and Kirk are also great. The film is a great ride. "Brute Force" is also one of my favorites.

Out of the Past
Body and Soul
Pursued
Nighmare Alley
Miracle on 34th Street
Brute Force
Crossfire
Monsieur Verdoux

I have not seen "Black Narcissus", though I have heard so many good things about it, I suspect it would eventually be added to my list upon viewing. As you mention, "Kiss of Death" is worth mentioning for Widmark's great performance though the film a whole is not up there with these others.Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01808503055317962289noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-80199290328366546862009-07-10T09:08:54.811-04:002009-07-10T09:08:54.811-04:00At the end of the day I must support Dave on his c...At the end of the day I must support Dave on his choice here as this may well be the greatest noir ever made, an argument which is superlatively made here in a deft consideration of character, plot, themes and filmmaking style. It's one of the greatest essays ever at this site in fact, in my view.
But Samuel Wilson's choice, BLACK NARCISSUS, which may be my favorite P & P pushes very close as does the IRA-themed film by Carol Reed. And Out of the Past was indeed the quintessential film noir - the perfect movie, along with (as you mentioned) Double Indemnity, as well as The Killers, to recommend to someone who wants to know what this genre is all about.

Jane Greer as Kathie Moffat is arguably one of the most stunning and lethal femme fatales in noir history. She is perhaps second only to Ava Gardener's Kitty Collins. And Kirk Douglas' turn as an unctuous, slippery and sardonic gangster was in a way an early indication (and a companion piece) to his devastating turn in Ace in the Hole.Shubhajithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02040495040897333606noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-32519850917847143152009-07-09T20:45:44.331-04:002009-07-09T20:45:44.331-04:00I can't argue with you, Samuel... great films ...I can't argue with you, Samuel... great films that you list here! It's another of those instances where I can recognize a movie's indisputable quality yet never really get into it.
