Thanks for the response and compliments!Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07134196370913749544noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-36570807046922939692010-01-31T17:53:33.742-05:002010-01-31T17:53:33.742-05:00"Any opportunity to watch Richard Widmark as ..."Any opportunity to watch Richard Widmark as a sociopath should be taken advantage of, and he does not disappoint here. But even the madness of Jefty is not the high point of the film. The catalyst to the success of the movie, and really the centerpiece of the entire story, is Ida Lupino’s Lily Stevens."<br /><br />Dead-on on both points Dave, and as John subsequently remarks after this superlative capsule essay - her presence (in this case smoky and sensual) is a diminting force. I agree that the underrrated Negulesco, has done even greater work (THE MASK OF DIMITRIOS-1944; JOHNNY BELINDA-1948; HUMORESQUE-1946; TITANIC-1953; HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE-1953; THREE COINS IN THE FOUNTAIN-1954 and the cult film THE BEST OF EVERYTHING-1959) but the placement of this film at #81 is just about right.Sam Julianonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-42818671335678818872010-01-30T18:46:25.414-05:002010-01-30T18:46:25.414-05:00John - I agree with you. I've always been a Lupino fan, but the more I watch her, even rewatching favorites, the more I appreciate her work.Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07134196370913749544noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-578997264816756307.post-21201172852420099762010-01-30T11:01:43.943-05:002010-01-30T11:01:43.943-05:00I have been on a Ida Lupino kick lately having wat...I have been on a Ida Lupino kick lately having watched "While the City Sleeps", "On Dangerous Ground", "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes", "Beware, My Lovely" and "The Lady and the Mob." I also have "Moontide" lined up to be watched and have been itching to rewatch "Road House", "High Sierra" and "They Drive by Night". Additionally, recently watched "The Hitch-hiker" which she directed and recently finished reading her biography. Believe it or not this was all not by design. <br />The combination of Lupino and Widmark make "Road House" really hard to resist! She was an amazing actress who could be tough or vulnerable. Another admirable capsule review.Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01808503055317962289noreply@blogger.com
