Update on 1939 (and possibly future tough years!)

Just posting to give a little update on the fact that there might be a little bit longer delay than usual with the 1939 selection. There are just so many films to choose from, I'm going back and re-watching those that I haven't watched recently and even those that I am familiar with for comparison purposes. So many great films that I've narrowed down to a few select titles, but I am still not locked in on a definitive choice. I'm not complaining... this is why the countdown is a such a great time for me! I get to go back and re-watch some of my all-time favorites and also take in some classics for the very first time. I'm loving it! 1939 will easily be up by this weekend.

I can foresee a similar circumstance arising with 1941 as well, just as a heads-up on that year as well. These won't be overly long delays and I assume no one will mind. The every-other-day posting schedule will try to be maintained but for some of these tough years, the decision might take just a bit longer.

  1. 1940 was no "off year", either! I don't think I could choose just one movie from a whole year.

  2. Agreed, C.K.! But, there are some clear leaders for me personally for 1940. 1939 and 1941 there are a multitude of films that I could pick and be equally happy with. Like I said, I'm not complaining... it's great fun going back to some of these films and trying to pick one. Obviously it can be somewhat arbitrary picking just one film, as selections could possibly change by the day. Still, it's great fun trying to do it!

  3. Dave, I like that 1941 isn't the slam dunk some would think it should be. While you're at it, good luck with 1956 and 1962, too. Those ought to be tough years.

  4. The "slam dunk" of 1941 I'm guessing you're referring to is in the running and may very well be the selection, but it is FAR from a no-brainer for me.

You're right about 56 and 62, but I feel somewhat confident in my likely selection for 62. I think it'll actually surprise some people.

  5. 1959 should also be a tough year. Should all be interesting.

Well Dave, for me the choice is definitely a "no brainer" as the unmentioned choice is one of the supreme masterpieces in the history of the cinema. But let's see what is proposed here......

  7. I agree that it's great, Sam, but Mr. Sturges did quite well in 41 too! :) If personal taste weren't involved, you're right, it's a no contest.

  8. Ah Ha Dave! Mr. Sturges's film is indeed a very strong runner up, as are a few others. I quite agree with you there.

  9. I've really enjoyed reading all your reviews so far - and am building up a long list of movies I must see from your choices and everyone else's suggestions! Great stuff all round. Judy

  10. Before anyone nails down their choices for 1941 let me add that Mr. Hawks, Mr. Walsh and even Mr. Capra did quite well that year, though mine may be a minority opinion on the last one, and so, reportedly, did Mr. Ford. The trouble with 41 is that, even were we to create a Rookie Director category, it's still not a slam dunk.

  11. You're absolutely right, Samuel... that's why I'm just adding the warning now that there might also be little delay with 41 as I go back and revisit certain films in making my choice.
